    History

    • The actual history of the Quinceañera is not clear; however, it is rooted in the Aztec culture. Traditionally, the parents of Aztec girls would have a Quinceañera celebration to formally recognize their passage into womanhood.

    Features

    • The Mis Quince celebration includes a thanksgiving Mass, or Misa de acción de gracias, at the family's church. Following the service, the girl's younger sisters, cousins and friends hand out favors (known as bolos) to the congregation. A celebration takes place afterwards.

    Dress

    • A Quinceañera dress is required for the girl being celebrated. Typically an elaborate, full-length gown, the actual dress depends on the family's income level and social status. A bouquet of flowers is also carried.

    Gifts

    • The birthday girl is traditionally presented with a pair of high-heeled shoes, which mark her new status as an adult.
